What’s covered on the day?
This session will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of intravenous drug administration. It will equip the learners with all of the essential knowledge required to care for a patient who needs IV drugs. It will note monitoring whilst receiving an intravenous drugs. The practical session will allow the learners to develop the appropriate skills for inserting and monitoring a peripheral cannula, as well as running an IV infusion as well as mixing IV additives
Learners will complete a knowledge assessment at the end of the theory session, allowing them to evidence their understanding of the required criteria. The practical session will include simulated practice – formal assessment and final competency sign off will take place back in the work environment and is dependent on the organisational policy and procedures.

- Develop and apply the knowledge needed in relation to legislations, policies and best practice of intravenous medications including gaining consent
Identify the importance of good infection control procedures to minimise the risk of hospital acquired infections
To recognise safe storage of medications
To identify ways to ensure safety and reduce the risk of errors
To identify the various types of vascular access devices
Identify the equipment needed for intravenous medication and the procedure for safe administration
Identify potential complications from vascular access devices and measures to prevent or minimise these
Discuss and ensure understanding of care of vascular access devices
