Specialist training develops the knowledge and practical skills needed to support people with particular health conditions, treatments or care needs. It goes beyond general mandatory training and is usually linked to an employee’s role and responsibilities. Examples include wound management, pressure ulcer prevention, leg ulcer management and ear irrigation.
Specialist training is suitable for health and social care professionals whose roles involve providing a particular type of care or completing a specialist procedure. This may include nurses, nursing associates, healthcare assistants, support workers and other appropriately authorised employees. Employers should ensure that the selected training is suitable for each learner’s role, experience and scope of practice.

Entry requirements vary depending on the course and the skills being taught. Some courses are suitable for employees who are new to the subject, while others require learners to hold an appropriate professional registration, possess existing knowledge or have relevant workplace experience. We will confirm any requirements before the training is booked.
Yes. Where appropriate, we can tailor the course content to reflect your service, the learners’ roles and the needs of the people they support. We can also consider your equipment, procedures and relevant workplace policies, helping learners understand how the training relates to their day-to-day practice.
Completing a course demonstrates that the learner has undertaken the relevant training, but it does not automatically authorise them to perform a specialist procedure independently. Learners may complete a simulated skills assessment during the course where appropriate. The employer remains responsible for assessing competence in the workplace, confirming that the activity falls within the employee’s role and formally authorising them to undertake it.
The appropriate refresher period will depend on the subject, the complexity of the activity, current guidance, workplace policy and how frequently the employee uses the skill. Training should also be reviewed when practice or equipment changes, a new risk is identified, the employee has not used the skill for some time, or concerns arise about their knowledge or competence.
